Here's short video my girlfriend made before we left for a trip about how to pack and what to pack for a one carry on bag trip. This trip took us across Europe and lasted five weeks.
It goes to show all the things you are able to pack in one carry on size bag. I'm convinced girls are able to pack more in the same space due to the size of the clothes. Its amazing how much she was able to pack into one bag. She even didn't end up using some of the clothes she packed and had room to buy more there. The trick is to pack clothes that can mostly all be interchanged to make several outfits.
